R.E.M. was the logical choice to score a film about Andy Kaufman; after all,
they paid tribute to the comic legend with this movie's title track. The rest
of the "Man on the Moon" soundtrack is filled with the verbal antics of Kaufman
himself, a few short, reflective instrumentals composed by R.E.M., and the
group's excellent new tune "The Great Beyond." Overall, this soundtrack is
short but sweet.

"The
Melvin Van Peebles Collection"

Okay, so maybe Melvin Van Peebles's two classic soundtrack efforts--"Sweet
Sweetback's Baadasssss Song" and the musical "Don't Play Us Cheap"--isn't
for everyone. This is still a great reissue. Backed by a young Earth, Wind
& Fire and a handful of great vocalists, these frenetic, loud, in-your-face
soundtracks from 1971 and 1972 sound like a precursor to hip-hop with plenty
of funk, gospel, spoken word, and blues elements. Before we had blaxploitation
films, we had Melvin Van Peebles. And cinema hasn't been the same since. Read more
"Sleepy
Hollow"

Danny Elfman's score for "Sleepy Hollow" is the perfect sonic complement to
Tim Burton's horror flick. The Washington Irving tale is made all the scarier
with Elfman's mix of frightful strings, eerie percussion, and snippets of
children's choir. Elfman has collaborated on numerous scores with Burton,
and this is one of the composer's finest. Read more

and Lowdown"

Woody Allen's movies are always filled with nostalgic, classic jazz and pop
standards. But on "Sweet and Lowdown," the director's mythical bio-pic of
Emmet Ray (billed as the world's second-best jazz guitarist, just after Django
Reinhardt), we get an entire movie based on music and a musician. The soundtrack
for this audio feast features the Dick Hyman Group and guitarist Howard Alden.
For fans of jazz guitar, this set of classic tunes ("Just a Gigolo," "Wrap
Your Troubles in Dreams," "Sweet Georgia Brown") will be both mellow and enjoyable.

Talented Mr. Ripley"

Matt Damon sings? Yes, it's true. On "The Talented Mr. Ripley," the heartthrob
does his best to croon like Chet Baker on "My Funny Valentine." And while
his singing skills are an acquired taste, great jazz tunes by Charlie Parker,
Miles Davis, and the Guy Barker International Quintet perfectly evoke the
movie's setting of Italy in the '50s. In addition, Gabriel Yared's instrumental
score adds a mysterious and reflective element to all that jazz. Read more

Randy Newman is back for "Toy Story 2" with a soundtrack that's just as good
as his score for the original movie. In addition to Newman's instrumental
orchestrations (a mix of familiar themes, Western melodies, and high drama),
Sarah McLachlan sings "When She Loved Me" and crooner Robert Goulet lends
his vocal chords to "You've Got a Friend in Me." Read more

To be honest, this reviewer has never played "Medal of Honor" (nor too many
other video games). That said, even by Hollywood standards, this soundtrack
for a WWII adventure game will stand the test of time. Composer Michael Giacchino
has created a John Williams-inspired score filled with drama, inventive orchestrations,
and plenty of action-adventure tension. Read more
